Welcome to Issue 74 of Travel Viewpoint, our June 2025 edition. By June the plains of north and central India are at their hottest, schools are on holiday and the roads to the hills fill up. This issue is about escaping the heat in a way that feels meaningful: fewer stops, longer stays, slower roads and a little more attention to the places and people that receive us.

Escape the Heat with Meaningful Mountain & Slow Travel Experiences in India. Why this month we are asking readers to choose one valley instead of five, and to travel in a way the mountains can sustain.

Slow routes and short stays
The one route that explains slow mountain travel: Shimla to Kalpa along the Sutlej. One road from Shimla into Kinnaur, taken over several days rather than one long drive.
Three days, not a checklist: Landour and Mussoorie, slowly. A loose plan for three unhurried days above Mussoorie.
Honest advice
What to skip on a first summer trip to the hills. The traffic jams, crowded viewpoints and rushed plans worth avoiding, and what to do instead.
A quieter place beside the famous one: Tirthan Valley beside Kullu–Manali. A river valley a short detour from one of India’s busiest summer destinations.
Food, stay, and how you actually move in the summer hills. Buses, shared taxis, homestays, dhabas and the mountain dishes worth seeking out.
Before you go
June is also the month when the monsoon begins to arrive in parts of the Himalaya, usually towards the end of the month, though timing varies from year to year. Check weather advisories and road updates before you set out, keep a buffer day in your plans, and travel light on plastic. The mountains will still be there tomorrow; there is no need to see all of them this week.
Happy, slow travelling.
