A coastal trip in India is shaped as much by practical choices as by any beach. How you travel along the coast, where you sleep and what you eat can make the difference between a rushed, stressful trip and a slow, rewarding one. This guide covers the essentials for a May coastal trip, with a focus on the west coast from Maharashtra to Kerala and a few notes on the east coast and islands.
How you actually move
The Konkan Railway
For the west coast, the Konkan Railway is one of the great travel experiences in India. It runs from near Mumbai through Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka to Mangaluru, with trains continuing into Kerala. The line crosses rivers and valleys on long bridges and passes through many tunnels. Stations such as Ratnagiri, Kudal, Thivim, Madgaon, Karwar, Gokarna Road and Udupi put you within reach of the coast.
Trains in May can be heavily booked because of school holidays, so book early. During the monsoon, the Konkan Railway typically runs on a slower monsoon timetable for safety; check timings if you are travelling at the end of May or in June.
State buses and local transport
State transport buses connect towns and villages along the coast. They are inexpensive and reliable, if not always comfortable. In Goa and coastal Karnataka, private buses also run frequently on many routes.
For short distances, auto-rickshaws and local taxis are common. Agree on a fare before you set off where meters are not used. App-based cabs operate in some cities but not everywhere on the coast.
Ferries
Ferries are an essential part of coastal travel in some regions. In Goa, government ferries have long carried passengers and vehicles across rivers. On the Konkan coast, ferries cross some creeks. In Kerala, the state water transport department runs boat services on the backwaters, such as around Alappuzha, offering a cheap and memorable way to travel. Island ferries in the Andaman and Lakshadweep are a different matter and require careful planning and permits where applicable.
Schedules change, and some services stop during the monsoon or in rough weather. Check before you rely on a ferry.
Two-wheelers
Renting a scooter or motorbike is a popular way to get around beach towns, especially in Goa. Only do this if you have a valid licence and experience. Wear a helmet, avoid riding at night and never ride after drinking.
Cars with drivers
For longer coastal routes, such as the Konkan coast, hiring a car with a local driver is often the most comfortable option. Drivers know the roads and can suggest stops.
Where to stay
Homestays
Coastal homestays offer a chance to stay with local families, eat home-cooked food and learn about the area. Many coastal states have homestay schemes and registrations. Ask about air conditioning or fans, which matter in May, as well as water supply, distance from the beach and food.
Beach huts and shacks
On some beaches, simple huts and cottages offer a basic, close-to-the-sea experience. Many of these are seasonal and may close at the end of May. Check before booking.
Heritage stays
Old Portuguese houses in Goa, traditional homes in Kerala and colonial bungalows elsewhere have been converted into heritage stays. They can be more expensive but offer character and comfort.
State tourism properties
State tourism corporations run hotels and resorts in many coastal locations, often in good spots. Facilities vary, but they can be good value.
What you eat
The Konkan and Goa
The Konkan coast is known for its seafood. In Maharashtra, Malvani cuisine uses coconut, kokum and a spice blend called Malvani masala. Try fish thalis with surmai or pomfret, sol kadhi and bhakri. In Goa, look for fish curry and rice, the everyday staple, and dishes such as xacuti and cafreal. Goan bakeries sell poi bread and sweets like bebinca.
Coastal Karnataka
Coastal Karnataka is famous for Mangalorean and Udupi food. Udupi vegetarian restaurants serve dosas, idlis and meals. Mangalorean cuisine includes dishes such as kori rotti, chicken curry with crisp rice wafers, and neer dosa, a thin rice crepe. Seafood is abundant.
Kerala
Kerala’s coastal cuisine features fish cooked with coconut, kodampuli or tamarind, and curry leaves. Try karimeen (pearl spot fish) in the backwaters, appam with stew, and sadya meals on banana leaves. Toddy shops serve spicy fish and tapioca alongside palm toddy.
The east coast and islands
On the Bay of Bengal, the East Coast Road from Chennai towards Mamallapuram and Puducherry is a popular coastal drive, and Puducherry itself is easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. Further north, Odisha’s coast around Puri has its own seafood and temple food traditions. For the Andaman Islands, flights to Sri Vijaya Puram (formerly Port Blair) and inter-island ferries need advance planning, while Lakshadweep requires an entry permit for most visitors. Check current rules and schedules, as they change.
Eating responsibly
Eat at busy local restaurants, where food is fresh. Ask about the catch of the day. Mechanised fishing on the west coast usually pauses during the monsoon for fish breeding, which can change availability at the start of June. Avoid single-use plastic and carry a refillable bottle.
Practical tips
- Heat: May is hot and humid. Plan activities for early morning and evening.
- Cash: Carry some cash for small vendors and homestays.
- Health: Stay hydrated, use sunscreen and carry basic medicines.
- Weather: Watch for monsoon advisories towards the end of the month.
- Emergencies: In India, 112 is the national emergency number.
The slow way works
A slow coastal trip is mostly about logistics done well: a train ride along the coast, a homestay where you stay several nights, a ferry across a river, and meals that taste of the sea. These choices also support local communities and reduce your footprint on a fragile coastline.
