Jhandewalan Market – Bicycles Everywhere

August 29, 2021 in City Guide, Delhi

Jhandewalan Market

Jhandewalan near Karolbagh, popular for Jhandewalan temple, also has perhaps the only wholesale toy and cycle market of Delhi.

An unassuming locality, the stores stocked with toys/cycles (bicycles as well as tricycles and kids bikes) resemble warehouses. The only differences perhaps are the bright packaging and fancy sizes and shapes of the goods that they sell.

Starting from games and toys to dolls to small cars that may be driven to bicycles, this market has it all for the little masters and misses.

Given the stiff competition among the shops, the prices are reasonable in Jhandewalan Market. There is very little scope for bargaining though. This makes our work easier and saves time for a customer who goes, selects an item, pays, and gets it stowed in his car. In fact, most shops also provide home delivery services for moderate transport charges.

This is a great place for keen bicyclists from all age groups and expertise, including children, youth, racers, regular cyclists, mountain riders et al.

What makes this market so unique is that it is a one-stop-shop to find bicycles and bicycle parts from all the leading brands—at various prices, designs, sizes, or colors. Besides the regular standard bicycles, a spectrum of sports bicycles, road bicycles, and mountain bicycles are also available here.

The market is usually open every day from 10 am to 7 pm, and is shut on Mondays.

An interesting edge that this place has over local toy stores is that apart from the standard varieties, one gets to peruse new concepts in games that have been recently developed in India or imported from China and other countries.

Want To Buy Books? Visit Sunday Book Market in Delhi

August 29, 2021 in City Guide, Delhi

Visit Sunday Book Market

You can find all kinds of books here. Be it school-college books or mythology books, there is nothing that you do not find here. You will also get old used books, that too at very low prices. If you want, you can also sell your old books here.

1. The Daryaganj Sunday Market is open only on Sundays, as the name obviously suggests.

2. Make sure you reach by 9.30 a.m. so that you can get the best out of your visit here.

3. Post 9.30 a.m. you should be prepared for multitudes of crowds that will throng the market. It would be better if you are on the alert to avoid any incidents taking place.

4. Being a Sunday, does not guarantee that there will be less traffic on the roads; Old Delhi always has massive traffic jams.

5. The Sunday Book Market is more than 1 kilometer long, so be prepared to walk this distance.

6. Wear comfortable shoes, preferably walking shoes in order to ensure your feet don’t hurt much after all the walking.

7. Carry water with you as options for buying water are limited.

8. The book market has thousands of books, magazines & journals on sale so be prepared to spend long hours across this stretch of the market.

9. Carry a backpack if possible so that it’s easier to walk around the market. Also, the booksellers do not give you books in a cover/ carry bag; hence, a backpack comes in handy.

10. There are many used books as well as new books; some booksellers sell by the kilo and some sell 2-3 books at a certain rate, such as 2 books for Rs.100/-

11. Well, bargaining goes without saying…do your best, though many of these booksellers don’t budge and some do.

12. As the market is situated on the streets of Daryaganj, most of their books are covered in dust, so you will have to get your hands dirty and you may have to dig your way through a pile of books.

13. Carry essentials such as snacks, hankies or tissues, so that you are prepared for your visit.

14. The metro would be your best option. Ensure you get down at either Chandini Chowk or the Chawri Bazaar stations located on the yellow line of the metro. These stations come right after one another.

15. If you are there during the summer cover your head or carry an umbrella since the heat will make you feel dizzy.

16. From Chandni Chowk station, Daryaganj is roughly 20 minutes away and from Chawri Bazaar it is roughly 15 minutes away.

17. Opt for a rickshaw ride to get there and fix a price; usually, it will cost you between Rs.30-60.

18. If you feel hungry after exploring the market, which you certainly will, head to the various food joints that are located nearby such as Paranthe Wali Gali, or you can explore the eating joints near the famous Jama Masjid.

Khangchendzonga National Park

Wildlife Sanctuaries In Sikkim : Envelope Into The Wild

July 30, 2021 in Sikkim, Wildlife & Nature

The dense forests, hills, and mountains of Sikkim are home to various animal species from musk deer and red panda to bharal or blue sheep, the Himalayan black bear, and the exclusive snow leopard. Due to encroachments, and climate change, many of these are endangered and threatened. The lowland forests of Sikkim are home to Sikkim’s largest reptile, Burmese python, house geckos, the Himalayan crestless porcupine, the Chinese pangolin, and barking deer. Several species of birds can also be found here -the great pied hornbill locally called ‘hongraio,’ Chestnut-breasted partridge, the red junglefowl, and more.

Sub-tropicals regions are home to the red panda, red fox Vulpes, the golden jackal, leopards, Asiatic black bear, palm civets, flying squirrels, wild boars, japalura lizards, cobras, kraits, and mountain pit vipers. The gaur – one of India’s largest bovids – has been seen in Pangolaka Wildlife Sanctuary.

Besides being one of the first adventure destinations in the country, Sikkim is also an ideal birdwatching destination. It has more than 550 species of birds, some of which have been declared endangered. You will find a rich diversity of butterflies, too- about half the 1,400 butterfly species recorded in India are found here, including the magnificent but endangered Kaiser-i-Hind, the Yellow Gorgon, and the Bhutan Glory. You can spot them in the four sanctuaries in Sikkim and at the Khangchendzonga National Park.

Sikkim’s exceptional bio-diverse landscape supports over 22 restricted-range bird species, including atleast 19 species that are endemic to the region and bird species that are not found anywhere else in the world. Its unique position on the map means that, despite its small size, Sikkim, with over 550 species, has a bird list that is almost as diverse as that of Bhutan or Nepal. Due to the progressive conservation policies of the government that are supported by the highly benign Buddhist religious beliefs of locals, Sikkim has a very high percentage of land under official protection as protected areas (PA) or Important Bird Areas (IBA). The state provides legal protection to critical birds habitats through a network of 22 IBAs and almost an equal number of PAs.

The eastern boundary of this park comprises the height of the Mountain Lamaongden. The southern border includes Mount Narsing and Mount Pandim. The western edge comprises the mighty Kanchendzonga, which presides over its namesake park and the Nepal Peak. Being bounded by such formidable features, it is no wonder that the park has remained ecologically untouched and has provided natural protection to the flora and fauna it shelters. The fauna includes the Snow leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Red Panda, Barking deer, etc. The KNP is surrounded by a biosphere that combines nature conservation with scientific research, environmental training, environmental education monitoring, and demonstration. Many places in this park have perhaps never been trodden by man, and new species may likely be discovered here.

The Sanctuary is the home of Himalayan Black Bear, Red Panda, Civet cat, and many birds and butterflies. Fambong Lho is ideal for birdwatching as it shelters birds species like the endangered Rufous-headed hornbill and laughing thrush. The Sanctuary is also rich in animals like red panda, barking deer, yellow-throated marten, Himalayan brown bear, and in flora with an abundance of rhododendron and orchids.

Best Time To Visit: April to July, when the Rhododendrons are in full bloom.

Timings: Morning 8 AM to 3 PM

Varsey Rhododendron Wildlife Sanctuary
Varsey Rhododendron Wildlife Sanctuary

Varsey Rhododendron Wildlife Sanctuary

This Rhododendron Sanctuary lies in the West corner of Sikkim. Mountains scarred by landslides suggest that development activities are taking a toll on the environment, and flora and fauna are affected. The loss of topsoil, soil instability, degeneration of agricultural land, and shrinking of catchment areas of the rivers are cause for concern. The alpine regions of Sikkim in particular, which look so powerfully big and formidable, are ironically most vulnerable and sensitive to environmental degradation. High altitude soil is not readily regenerative, and therefore overgrazing of yaks and sheep in alpine meadows has led to many stretches of land becoming barren.

Man has realized that forests form an indispensable part of our life support system and placed their conservation high on the agenda. Perhaps in the thousands of species of flora in Sikkim, some of them unique to this state and not found elsewhere, are some which await to be discovered to provide life-saving drugs to fight diseases like cancer and AIDS that are stalking humanity. It is indeed sad that in the wildness is the preservation of the world.

Best Time To Visit: November to May. Snowfall and rain might dampen your trekking experience, and also, the Rhododendron Flowers won’t be a part of your experience during some months.

Timings: Morning 8 AM to 5 PM
